Declaring 1997 the Year of National Accord and Commemoration of Victims of Political Repression

Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated December 30, 1996 No. 3299

 Taking into account the numerous appeals of citizens, public associations and organizations of the Republic, in order to strengthen national harmony and socio-political stability, I decree:      

1. To declare 1997 the Year of National Accord and Commemoration of Victims of Political Repression.      

2. The Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan:      

1) to form a commission for the Year of National Accord and Commemoration of Victims of Political Repression, inviting representatives of political parties, national cultural centers, public and religious associations to join it. Instruct regional akims to form similar commissions; P970086      

2) to develop and submit to the Head of State by January 15, 1997, a plan of relevant events, providing for their widespread and timely coverage in the media;      

3) organize work to present citizens of the Republic who have distinguished themselves in ensuring national harmony, strengthening socio-political stability, and humanizing relations between individuals and the state to be awarded state awards;    

4) take measures to build new and restore existing monuments to victims of political repression and their mass graves.;      

5) take other necessary measures to implement this Decree. U973443      

3. The National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan should consider issuing coins dedicated to the Year of National Accord and the Memory of Victims of Political Repression.      

4. This Decree comes into force from the moment of publication.
